Are miniature dachshunds good with cats, rabbits and poultry?

We familiarise our puppies with all kinds of animals to make sure they are not afraid of them. Dachshunds are hunting dogs and may still view poultry and rabbits as prey despite early socialisation, so I would never leave them together unsupervised!

Do dachshunds bark a lot and can you teach them not to do it?

Dachshunds were bred to bark. It is a virtue in a hunting dog, as it allows hunters to locate their dogs and the animals they are hunting. This is why dachshunds love to let you know something is happening (or about to happen) by barking. The desire to bark varies between individuals – some dogs bark more than others – and generally, the more dogs you have, the more they bark! It is possible to teach them to bark less, but you have to be very consistent.

Is there a difference between male and female dachshunds?

Boys are usually more affectionate, loyal and eager to please. They tend to bond closely with one person but can be more clingy. Girls are usually more independent and can be more stubborn. They may be more reserved but also more focused during training. Ultimately, both male and female dachshunds make delightful and funny companions. The best choice depends on your lifestyle, experience and individual puppy’s personality.

Because they are vocal, early training and socialization are important to help manage barking—especially in an apartment setting.
