Dachshunds are adorable and lovable little dogs with a unique body shape. Dachshunds are generally healthy and long lived little dogs but they can have some specific health concerns that every Dachshund owner should be aware of.

1. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).

This disease involves the degeneration of intervertebral disks, which act as cushions between vertebrae. As these discs deteriorate, they can herniate or rupture, putting pressure on the spinal cord and leading to pain, nerve damage and even paralysis.

2. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA cord1):

PRA is an inherited condition that leads to progressive vision loss and can eventually cause blindness in Dachshunds. Fortunately there is genetic testing available for this condition and all our miniature dachshund puppies parents are tested for PRA cord1.

3. Sarcoglycan Deficiency Muscular Dystrophy(SDMD).

SDMD is a rare genetic disorder that affects the muscles and nervous system of Dachshunds. Symptoms may include weakness, exercise intolerance, and muscle wasting.
